Office pods vs office sheds: a comparison guide

Backyard offices go by two names. An office shed is traditionally built on site — a kit or custom carpentry project that arrives as lumber and takes weeks to finish. An office pod arrives complete: insulated, wired, glazed, and ready to work from the day it lands. Here's how the two approaches compare, and why Aurora Modular builds pods.

Install time

A shed is a construction project. Framing, sheathing, roofing, insulation, drywall, flooring, and finishing each take a day or more, and rain days push everything back. An office pod is built indoors over the same weeks and delivered as one finished piece. The crane visit takes an afternoon. You're working in it the next morning.

Permits and sizing

Most BC municipalities allow an accessory structure under roughly 108 sq ft without a building permit. Aurora pods are sized deliberately under that line — 106 sq ft — so most homeowners can skip the permit process entirely. A traditional office shed at a comparable interior size often crosses the threshold once the walls thicken with insulation and finish. Zoning setbacks still apply to both; confirm with your municipality.

Finish and daylight

Sheds are built for storage first and adapted for work. Windows are small, walls are thin, and heating is an afterthought. A pod is designed as a room from the start: a full-height glass wall pulls the garden in, built-in millwork replaces the desk, and the envelope is tight enough that a small heater keeps it comfortable through a Vancouver Island winter.

Cost, honestly

A bare shed kit looks cheaper on paper. Add insulation, drywall, electrical, flooring, proper windows, a door that seals, and a contractor to assemble it — and the two numbers converge. The difference is predictability. A pod is a fixed price with no change orders and no weather delays.

When a shed still makes sense

If you want to build it yourself, if you need an unusual footprint, or if the space is genuinely for tools and lawnmowers, a shed is the right answer. For a working room in the backyard, a pod is faster, tighter, and finished on day one.
